Institute Profile

The Institute of Materials Science and Engineering primarily aims to educate experts who are able to apply their knowledge of metallurgy and materials processing in practice and understand the structure of materials in relation to their mechanical and other useful properties. The fields of study include metallic materials and their alloys, as well as ceramic materials, composites, and polymers. Through its experts, the institute passes on its knowledge and experience to students at all three levels of education, i.e., bachelor's (Bc.), master's (Ing.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees.

The Institute of Materials Science and Engineering is currently divided into four departments:

Teams of employees have been formed across departments to focus on the following research areas:

  • Materials and Additive Technologies
  • Materials operating in a hydrogen environment
  • Ceramic materials
  • Material modelling
  • Mechanical properties and fatigue behaviour

The connecting links for the above-mentioned research areas lie in the laboratory equipment, which enables a comprehensive approach to problem solving, a high scientific and methodological level of experiments, analyses and measurements, and, of course, the ability to professionally interpret the results.

The comprehensive professional orientation of the institute is developed in cooperation with universities not only in the Czech Republic but also abroad, and with institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

The activities of the workplace are closely linked to the activities of the NETME Centre research and development centre and the Central European Institute of Technology CEITEC.
